Resident Services Summer Intern (CU PIIE)

Description
The PIIE intern will work closely with the Resident Services Family Site staff and community partners to support onsite educational programming for children, youth, and families at eight BHP housing sites.

This position involves traveling from different housing sites and offices. We strongly recommend that the candidate have a reliable mode of transportation. Hours are flexible, candidates should be able to take ownership of their own tasks with little supervision. Intern is responsible for scheduling a regular time to meet with supervisor for check-ins.

Responsibilities include:
  • Working collaboratively with partners such as the Boulder Valley School District, the City of Boulder Youth Services Initiative, the “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Boulder County, and early education service providers.
  • Supporting the Summer Shuffle, now in its seventh year, by working with Boulder Valley School District teachers, BHP staff, parents and preschool and elementary school children to provide a fun and enriching summer literacy program.
  • Supporting the expansion of this program by reaching out to parents and children to promote the program, coordinating transportation and program schedules, implementing program design, supporting daily activities and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Researching innovative and successful practices between housing authorities, school districts, and community partners throughout the United States.
  • Additional responsibilities will be defined based on the intern’s passions, skills, and interests and their alignment with our goal to improve educational outcomes for children and support families.
  • Hours should average 30-40 hours per week. Days and times are flexible based on programming.

  • This opportunity provides a chance to learn about program development, collaborative partnerships, community engagement, and the challenges facing economically disadvantaged families living in subsidized housing.
  • The intern will be encouraged to create and implement a educational program by the end of their internship. This will be an opportunity for the intern to showcase what they have learned throughout their summer experience, supporting the Summer Shuffle program and collaborating with community partners.
  • This research and mini showcase project will support our efforts to plan, implement, and evaluate a successful school/housing partnerships to close the achievement and opportunity gaps among Latino youth in Boulder.

Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, takes initiative, is a team player, and is interested in supporting students’ educational achievement.
  • Candidate should have experience and feel comfortable working with children 0-8 years old.
  • Spanish speaking/writing skills are required.
  • This position also requires for candidates to be adaptable and resourceful.
  • Students in the fields of Education, Human Services, Psychology, or Community Development and Sustainability will find many opportunities to apply the classroom concepts in unique and reality-based situations.
  • Interns with a passion for learning about social justice issues, including housing, immigration, and education will find ample opportunities to explore these issues.
