Description

The City of Lafayette’s Cultural Resources Division is seeking an intern for 30 hours per week (360 hours total) during summer 2020. Primary job duties will include: 1. Providing support for the Art Night Out event series. Tasks will include coordinating logistics related to the event planning, volunteer coordination, assisting with promotion through social media, event set up and take down, and event photography. 2. Working as a docent/host at The Collective. On Friday evening and weekends, the intern may staff the venue alone. Duties include greeting public visitors, sharing information about gallery exhibits, and answering questions about other cultural arts activities in the city. 3. Acting as an assistant to the curators and artists involved in exhibits at The Collective. This may include helping to hang an exhibit, creating gallery cards, creating and/or editing promotional materials, working with artists, and providing support to help ensure their experience is positive. 4. Event photography and editing of photos. The Collective will provide appropriate equipment for use at specific arts events. 5. Creating press releases, graphic, infographics and other materials supporting arts events.

6. Providing support for Picnic on the Plaza, a noon concert in the heart of Old Town on Thursdays throughout the summer. This may include helping with promotion and organization, as well as set up and clean-up of the event. 7. Providing support for Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission and Public Art Committee programs by helping to gather reports, and support tracking of information. This will include data entry, updating large databases and manipulation of excel spreadsheets. 8. Supporting the Arts and Culture Program Manager and other staff with community outreach and communications. Tasks would include pre-scheduling social media posts, editing photos, and editing and reformatting submissions for the newsletter The Arts Source. 9. Helping with day-to-day office tasks as needed, as well as assisting with room set up and break down for special events. 10. Other duties as assigned, depending on events and project needs. This could include assisting with art hangings, compiling attendance and evaluation data, running errands, etc. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 
Demonstrated interest in the arts. • Experience interacting with the public in a professional setting. Key holder experience strongly preferred. • Superior interpersonal and verbal communications skills. Strong writing, proofreading, and copy editing skills. • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and social media platforms required. Experience using the Adobe Suite, photo manipulation software, working on newsletters and basic graphic design, is strongly preferred. • Event photography background desired. • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects. • Ability to work independently as a gallery host. • Conversational Spanish, not required, but desired.

Our ideal candidate is an individual who is deeply interested in exploring how the creative arts are used to strengthen communities. The candidate would have an interest in public service through local government, and curiosity about how municipal agencies can catalyze and support local arts-based businesses, artists and creatives, and the nonprofit arts sector. This person would enjoy interacting directly with the public to encourage and support their participation in cultural arts opportunities in their community. The ideal candidate would be someone with a personal interest in contributing to making Lafayette a thriving, creative place.
