Goldman Sachs

Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Being able to experience what it would be like working as a full time analyst at the firm. It was also a very collaborative environment and I was able to work with many different team members and other interns.

What I wish was different

I wish the training at the start of the summer had been more technical based. A lot of what we did was focused on the culture of the firm rather than hard skills like excel.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is to network with other people on your team as well as other people in the firm. No matter what company you work for this is valuable to expand your network and learn more about what you want to do in the future.

What I liked

You will learn more in 10 weeks than years of class. The caliber of people is unmatched. You are challenged but supported.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have focused more on expressing who I was than my ability to digest the difficult material.

Advice

Relax but give your all everyday. Focus on being the best version of yourself and let it show through your work and relationships.

It’s as much a 10-week interview of your as it your chance to interview them! I had a great experience and realized overall it wasn’t the best fit for me at the moment, but I am so glad to have had the opportunity.

Market Risk Quantification Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

We didn't just have useless intern projects, we actually did work that full time members did when we weren't there, so it really felt like we had an important roll to play at the firm. Also, we were able to have catch-ups with anyone that we wanted to talk to (barring those whose schedules were very full). I really liked how we were encouraged to talk to anyone and everyone about their roles, and we were able to make suggestions about their work. They really have a flat culture, and you get to work with some of the smartest and most interesting people I have ever met.

What I wish was different

I didn't exactly love the work I was doing, Also, this isn't a 9-5 job and they pay you salary not hourly, which is different from most internships. I also wish I got more choice in which team we got placed on, they kind of just told us what team was giving us an offer and matched us themselves.

Advice

I really had a great time! If you really want to work at the firm some of the best ways to gain exposure would be to attend one of their exploratory programs as they recruit from those programs for internships. Also, don't be concerned about not knowing anything about finance - I didn't know any finance at all going in. They really do like to hire students from all majors, so don't be concerned at all!

Analyst (Investment Banking)

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed the intellectual people that have unparalleled drive and passion for their jobs. The company also advises some of the largest Fortune 500 companies in the world and to be able to be apart of the analysis behind the decisions they make was fascinating.

What I wish was different

The hours are extremely long. You might think you can handle 80 hour work weeks but at Goldman you might have to work more around 100 hours a week. And that could be for months depending on all the deals they have going on. The environment can get intense as you often run late into the night and the deliverables are usually on quick timelines. I would have hopped that as an intern they would have supported the fact that I was still in the process of learning their procedures and processes.

Advice

A lot of people aspire to do investment banking. I would tell everyone that considers pursuing a career in IB to take some serious introspection to determine if you really can handle the extremely long hours and the high pressure environment. It’s understandable that most people believe they could but it’s a completely different once you’ve actually stepped into the role and done nothing but your job for 3 months straight.
